This system for doing elimination rounds is mostly used in
the northwest US tournaments, mainly the Seattle area. It has been
used in one tourney that I have been to, and I plan to use this
format if I host a tourney at any time in the near future.
Instead
of allowing players to pick songs, one player will draw a card. The
card will have 5 songs written on the card. I strongly recommend you
put difficulty levels on there so that players may decide what to
eliminate.
Oh, I jumped ahead a little there. The two players
will take turns eliminating a song from the list, that they do not
want to play. The remaining 3 songs that are not eliminated are
played. As for the order of the songs, you can play the songs from
top to bottom, or let each player alternatively pick what songs could
come first, second, and third. For eliminating songs, I suggest that
the lower seed get the opportunity to eliminate a song first.
A
little confused? I'll illustrate.
#2 Chris vs. # 15
Larry
Card is picked.
The card contains these songs :
I'm
Gonna Get You Heavy (7 feet)
Ecstasy Heavy (7 feet)
My Summer
Love Heavy (9 feet)
Brilliant 2 U (K.O.G. G3 Mix) Oni (7 feet)
Dam
Dariram Heavy (8 feet)
Now to eliminate songs. Let's use the
recommendation that I have made.
Larry, being the lower seed,
gets to eliminate a song of his choosing first.
He decides to
eliminate Dam Dariram Heavy.
Now it's Chris's turn to
eliminate a song.
He decides to scratch My Summer Love Heavy
from the list.
So now, the card looks like this :
I'm
Gonna Get You Heavy (7 feet)
Ecstasy Heavy (7 feet)
My
Summer Love Heavy (9 feet)
Brilliant 2 U (K.O.G. G3 Mix)
Oni (7 feet)
Dam Dariram Heavy (8 feet)
Ok!
That leaves 3 songs still in the list. Those songs will be played.
What order? You can choose to have the songs played in that
particular order, or you can use this system to pick the order. The
higher seed will get to pick what song goes first, and the lower seed
gets to pick what song goes second. The last song, will be played
third.
You can use fighting style, or cumulative. Your choice.
Of course, it's simple. Just put 5 songs and difficulties
on a card. Make a minimum of 63 cards for a 32 person double
elimination bracket. You can even make more, and I strongly recommend
you do.
Note : I have competed in a tourney with this format.
However, this tourney I went to had a lot of things wrong, such as
using the cards again, and some crazy cards that no one seemed to
pass songs on them. Please be reasonable when making the cards. If
you want, separate the cards by the particular round, and so you can
make cards with appropriate difficulties corresponding to what round
they are to be used. Like in the finals, you only list the hardest
songs on heavy, not some stupid standard song.
If you
recongize some of these things, yes I took some of these rules from
the DDR Magic Tournament series, held every year(?) in Seattle,
Washington. This is another fair format to everyone in a
tourney.
